    Molecular Biology

Molecular biology, subdiscipline of biochemistry that studies the structure, synthesis and degradation of macromolecules (very large molecules) found in living cells, their metabolic regulation (how they are interrelated and balanced during synthesis and degradation) and their expression (how the genetic code operates and is controlled through structural interrelationships). Macromolecules include the nucleic acids DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) and RNA (ribonucleic acid); proteins (including enzymes); carbohydrates; and complexes of carbohydrates and proteins and lipids (soluble cellular fats and waxes) and proteins. The term was used by Oswald T. Avery in the late 1940s and was early equated with the study of nucleic acids.

    Monarch Butterfly

The monarch (Danaus plexippus) is a species of butterfly best known for its migratory habits. Sometimes called the wanderer butterfly, its annual migration is unlike that of any other insect found in North America. During Canadian summers, the monarch butterfly is normally found in every province except Newfoundland and Labrador, and is abundant wherever its host plant milkweed grows. Due to a decline in milkweed among other factors, the monarch butterfly is an endangered species. Still, its large size, orange-and-black colouration, and slow, sailing flight make it a familiar sight across most of Canada.

    Money in Canada

Money consists of anything that is generally accepted for the settlement of debts or the purchase of goods or services. The evolution of money as a system for regulating society’s economic transactions represented a significant advancement over earlier forms of exchange based on barter, in which goods and services are exchanged for other goods or services. Canadian money has its roots in the Indigenous wampum belts of the East, the early currencies of European settlers and the influence of the United States.
