Every Canadian university has a mathematics department and offers one or more programs in this field. The same is probably true of almost every university throughout the world, a reflection of the importance of mathematics in contemporary society (see Mathematics and Society). Mathematics came to prominence as a scientific discipline after the Renaissance, during the period historians call the Scientific Revolution (1450-1700), when brilliant astronomer-mathematicians such as Copernicus and Newton discovered the true nature of the solar system, with the sun at the centre and the planets revolving around it. (See also Astronomy.) The role that mathematics played in these major discoveries gave the discipline the stature it has maintained to this day.

hitchBOT

In 2013, researchers Frauke Zeller and David Harris Smith created hitchBOT, a hitchhiking robot. At the time, Zeller was an associate professor at the School of Professional Communication at Toronto Metropolitan University (then Ryerson University), and her husband, Smith, was an associate professor in the Department of Communication Studies & Media Arts at McMaster University. By creating hitchBOT, Zeller and Smith aimed to explore the interaction between humans and technology. After successfully hitchhiking across Canada and Europe, hitchBOT made headlines around the world in 2015, when it was destroyed by vandals in Philadelphia. (See also Robotics in Canada.)

Hospital Architecture

From the 17th century until about 1900, hospitals in what is now Canada were unspecialized, multi-purpose institutions for the sick poor. Until around 1900 those able to pay doctors preferred to be treated at home. The first hospitals emerged in places where people were unable to get medical treatment by physicians in their own homes. The financial sources and social mandates of hospitals have varied widely over the past 400 years. The earliest hospitals included military and marine hospitals, as well as Roman Catholic and then Protestant benevolent institutions. By the turn of the 20th century, the administration of scientific medicine was the major purpose of the Canadian hospital. Since about 1970, hospitals have become increasingly specialized; structurally they have become flexible and expandable.

Humboldt Broncos Bus Crash

One of Canada’s most high-profile highway tragedies occurred on 6 April 2018, when a bus carrying 28 members of the Humboldt Broncos junior hockey team collided with a transport truck at a highway intersection near Tisdale, Saskatchewan.
