Laurence John Moskowy (Primary Source)

In 2010, The Memory Project interviewed Laurence “Laurie” John Moskowy, a naval veteran of the Second World War. The following recording (and transcript) is an excerpt from this interview. Born on 8 April 1925 in Saskatchewan, Moskowy enlisted in the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve in late 1943. He served as an anti-aircraft gunner on HMCS West York, a Flower-class corvette that escorted merchant ships across the Atlantic (see Battle of the Atlantic). In this testimony, Moskowy recalls his experience on convoy duty, including looking for German submarines. (See also U-boat Operations in Canadian Waters.) After the war he returned to farming, but later worked for Saskatchewan Power. Moskowy died on 14 November 2018 and was buried in his hometown of Milestone, Saskatchewan.
