Brenda Milner

Brenda Atkinson Milner (née Langford), CC, GOQ, FRSC, FRS, neuropsychologist (born 15 July 1918 in Manchester, England). Dr. Milner pioneered the field of neuropsychology, combining neurology and psychology. Most notably, she discovered that the part of the brain called the medial temporal lobe (which includes the hippocampus) is critical for the forming of long-term memories. Milner’s later work revealed that the learning of skills involving the combination of vision and movement is not part of the medial temporal lobe system. These discoveries proved that there are different forms of memory in different brain regions. Through her observation of patients, Milner changed forever our understanding of the brain’s learning and memory mechanisms. Click here for definitions of key terms used in this article.

Brent Carver

Brent Christopher Carver, actor (born 17 November 1951 in Cranbrook, BC; died 4 August 2020 in Cranbrook). Brent Carver was one of Canada’s most versatile and soulful actors. He tackled the classics at the Stratford Festival (1980–87) and gave critically acclaimed performances in musical theatre, cabaret and film. The New York Times described him as “sensitive, soft-spoken yet nakedly emotional.” His performance in the 1993 Broadway production of Kiss of the Spider Woman earned him a Tony Award. Associated with Robin Phillips, who directed him both at Stratford and at Theatre London (1983–84), Carver also worked closely with John Neville at Edmonton's Citadel Theatre. Carver received the Governor General’s Performing Arts Award for Lifetime Artistic Achievement in 2014.

Bret Sergeant “Hitman” Hart, professional wrestler, stroke and cancer survivor advocate (born 2 July 1957 in Calgary, Alberta). The most famous member of the “first family of professional wrestling,” Bret Hart grew up in Calgary, where his father’s Stampede Wrestling promotion thrived for more than 30 years. Hart succeeded Hulk Hogan as the World Wrestling Federation (WWF)’s biggest draw. He earned a reputation as the best in-ring performer of all time and was the biggest star in the sport for most of the 1990s. He has been inducted into the Canadian Pro Wrestling Hall of Fame, the WWE Hall of Fame, the George Tragos/Lou Thesz Professional Wrestling Hall of Fame and Canada’s Walk of Fame.

Brian Ahern, CM, guitarist, record producer (born 1945 in Halifax, NS). Brian Ahern started out on CBC-TV’s Singalong Jubilee before becoming an acclaimed country music producer. He was a key figure in the careers of Anne Murray and Emmylou Harris, and was married to the latter from 1977 to 1984. From the mid-1970s to the late 2000s, Ahern produced more than 40 gold and platinum records for such artists as Johnny Cash, George Jones, Bette Midler, Rodney Crowell, Roy Orbison and Willie Nelson. Ahern has won four Juno Awards and one Grammy Award. He is a Member of the Order of Canada and the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame.
