    Frank Scott

    Francis Reginald (Frank) Scott, poet, professor of constitutional law, socialist (born 1 August 1899 in Quebec City, QC; died 30 January 1985 in Montreal, QC). Scott was an influential figure in the socialist movement in Canada. He was a founding member of the League for Social Reconstruction and the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation, helping to write the Regina Manifesto (1933). Scott also received two Governor General’s Literary Awards: Essays on the Constitution won the award for nonfiction (1977) and Collected Poems the award for poetry (1981).

    Frank Scott Hogg, astrophysicist (b at Preston, Ont 26 July 1904; d at Richmond Hill, Ont 1 Jan 1951). In 1929 Hogg received the first doctorate in ASTRONOMY awarded by Harvard, where he pioneered in the spectrophotometry of stars and in the study of the spectra of comets.

    Frank Calder

    Frank Sellick Calder, hockey executive (born 17 November 1877 in Bristol, England; died 4 February 1943 in Montreal, QC). Frank Calder served as president of the National Hockey League (NHL) from its founding in 1917 until his sudden death in 1943. During his tenure, the league expanded into major US cities and cemented itself as the top tier of professional hockey. The NHL’s rookie-of-the-year award (Calder Memorial Trophy) and the American Hockey League’s championship trophy (Calder Cup) are both named in his honour. Calder was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame and Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame.

    Franklin Carmichael

    Franklin Carmichael, painter (born 4 May 1890 in Orillia, ON; died 24 October 1945 in Toronto, ON). A founding member of the Group of Seven, Franklin Carmichael was active and influential as a painter, industrial designer and teacher. He was a founding member of both the Canadian Society of Painters in Water Colour and the Canadian Group of Painters. Carmichael taught at the Ontario College of Art (now the Ontario College of Art and Design University) as head of Graphic and Commercial Art from 1932 until his death in 1945.

    Franklin Search

    The disappearance in 1845 of Sir John Franklin and his crew in the Canadian Arctic set off the greatest rescue operation in the history of exploration. More than 30 expeditions over two decades would search by land and sea for clues as to his fate, in the process charting vast areas of the Canadian Arctic and mapping the complete route of the Northwest Passage. The search for clues continued into the 20th and 21st centuries. On 9 September 2014, it was announced that one of the expedition ships, later identified as the HMS Erebus, had been found off King William Island. On 12 September 2016, a team from the Arctic Research Foundation announced that they had located the Terror in Nunavut's Terror Bay, north of where the Erebus was found.
