    Debbie Brill

    This article has been updated with the generous support of Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame. Debbie Brill, OC, track and field athlete (born 10 March 1953 in Mission, BC). An originator of the reverse jumping style, a.k.a. the “Brill bend,” Debbie Brill was an 11-time national champion who set multiple Canadian records in women’s high jump. Her record of 1.98 m, set in 1984, stands to this day. She was also the first North American woman to clear the 6-foot (1.83 m) barrier. Brill won gold at the 1970 and 1982 Commonwealth Games, the 1971 Pan American Games and the 1979 International Amateur Athletic Federation World Cup. She also set the world indoor record (1.99 m) in 1982 and set two world records as a master’s athlete. Brill co-won the Bobbie Rosenfeld Award in 1971 and was named BC's Athlete of the Decade in 1980. She has been inducted into the Canadian Olympic Hall of Fame, the BC Sports Hall of Fame, the Athletics Canada Hall of Fame and Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame.

    Deborah Cox, singer, songwriter, actor (born 13 July 1974 in Toronto, ON). One of Canada’s top R&B artists, Deborah Cox is known for her powerful, soulful voice and sultry ballads. “Nobody’s Supposed to Be Here,” from her second album, One Wish (1998), set a record as the longest-running No. 1 R&B single in the US, staying atop the Billboard R&B Singles chart for 14 weeks. She has had six top 20 Billboard R&B singles and 13 No. 1 hits on Billboard’s Dance Club Songs chart. She has received multiple Juno Awards and Grammy Award nominations and has appeared as an actor in film and television and on Broadway. In 2022, she became the first Black woman and only the second Black Canadian (after Oscar Peterson) to be inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame. She was also inducted into Canada's Walk of Fame.

    Deborah (“Debbie”) Lynette Eisan (née Neveau), sailor, Indigenous rights activist, Elder, honorary captain (born 24 July 1957 in Sault Ste Marie, ON). Elder Debbie Eisan served as a supply technician in the Canadian Navy for 36 years. She is an Ojibwe Anishinaabe kwe (woman) from Batchewana First Nation (see also First Nations in Ontario). Eisan was instrumental in the design and development of the Eagle Staff for the Department of National Defence (DND) and the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF).

    Deepa Mehta

    Deepa Mehta, OC, OOnt, director, producer, screenwriter (born 15 September 1950 in Amritsar, India). Deepa Mehta has received international acclaim for her moving and provocative films, which often explore issues of human rights and social injustice. She is perhaps best known for her epic “Elements trilogy” — Fire (1996), Earth(1998) and Water (2005). The latter was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. Mehta has received the Governor General’s Performing Arts Award for Lifetime Achievement, the Order of Ontario and Queen’s Jubilee Medal. She was made an Officer of the Order of Canada for “challenging cultural traditions and bringing stories of oppression, injustice and violence to the fore.”
