    John (Jack) Archibald Armstrong, OC, business executive, geologist, engineer (born 24 March 1917 in Dauphin, Manitoba; died 26 December 2010 in Nanaimo, BC). Armstrong graduated from the University of Manitoba and worked four decades for Imperial Oil, Canada’s largest oil company. He served as its CEO (1973–81) and chairman (1974–81) before retiring 1982.

    John Charles Fields

    John Charles Fields, FRS, FRSC, mathematician (born 14 May 1863 in Hamilton, Canada West [Ontario]; died 9 August 1932 in Toronto, Ontario). J.C. Fields was an advocate for scholarly and scientific research. He was responsible for the 1924 International Mathematical Congress in Toronto. He also established the Fields Medal, which is awarded every four years at the International Congress of Mathematicians. The Fields Institute for Research in Mathematical Sciences at the University of Toronto is also named in his honour. (See also Mathematics; Mathematics and Society).

    John Charles Polanyi, CC, OOnt, PC, FRS, FRSC, chemist, professor (born 23 January 1929 in Berlin, Germany). In 1986, John Polanyi was jointly awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry (see Nobel Prizes and Canada; Chemistry). In addition to this achievement, he was the founding chairman (1960-78) of the Canadian Pugwash Group.

    John G. FitzGerald

    John Gerald FitzGerald, FRSC, bacteriologist, pathologist, public health reformer and author (born 9 December 1882 in Drayton, ON; died 20 June 1940 in Toronto, ON). Known as “Canada’s public health visionary,” Dr. John FitzGerald was the founder of the Connaught Antitoxin Laboratories and a major contributor to Canada’s modern public health system (see Sanofi Pasteur Limited). He manufactured the first safe, effective Canadian-made diphtheria antitoxin and rabies vaccines. His work led to the control and eradication of numerous deadly infectious diseases in Canada.
